EndNote: Introduction

This guide introduces the reference management software EndNote and provides resources for learning to use it.

EndNote Incompatible with Mac OS 10.12 Sierra

EndNote have advised that EndNote X7 is incompatible with Apple's new operating system, Sierra.

You will not be able to download EndNote from UWA on a computer running Sierra.

If you update your current computer to Sierra, EndNote's PDF viewer will not work.

EndNote will not fix these problems on EndNote X7 but will release EndNote X8 later this year.  X8 will be compatible with Sierra.

You may choose to use Mendeley rather than EndNote.

The information below is taken from the EndNote Knowledgebase.

Through our testing and reports from users, we discovered some issues with the EndNote PDF viewer.

The issues are that the thumbnail view is missing and that selecting and highlighting text is misaligned (meaning the text that is highlighted is not where your cursor is). We have since reported these issues to Apple. As a workaround, you can open up your PDFs to annotate in an external PDF application or use the annotation workflow in the free EndNote for iPad app.

These issues have been reported to Apple, but in the meantime, we recommend that you DO NOT upgrade to macOS Sierra.

Note that EndNote X7 installers are designed and signed correctly for operating systems prior to 10.12. To install EndNote X7 on Sierra, get the current EndNote X7 installer here.  Enter the product key during the installation process. If you already have an EndNote X7 folder in your applications folder, remove it (or rename the EndNote X7 folder to EndNote X7 old) and replace it with the EndNote X7 folder from that installer .dmg file. Volume and Site licence unlocked installers will not work correctly on 10.12 (because the installers become unsigned during the standard volume licence creation process, which has been made obsolete in 10.12 to patch security concerns), users will need to use the standard installer and method noted above and have the product key to unlock.

We are not currently planning a fix to EndNote X7, but will continue to work with Apple to resolve these issues for X8. EndNote X8 should be fully MacOS Sierra compatible.”

Introducing EndNote

EndNote is a software program that allows you to:

  • Create and organise a database of your references
  • Store PDF documents and other files with your references
  • Automatically format in-text citations and bibliographies in your chosen reference style

Note: EndNote is not a substitute for knowing how to construct the reference style you are required to use for your courses or publications.
(For more information on reference styles, see the options listed under ‘How do I reference with’ in the Guides directory.)

Who can use EndNote?

UWA staff and students can download EndNote X7 from the UWA Software Download site onto their personal machines for free. EndNote is available on all UWA subject library computers.

Windows users please note: the download option on the UWA Software Download site may not work using Internet Explorer, but will work using Firefox or Chrome.
